What is your personal definition of “doula”?

To me, a doula is someone who provides individualized support, knowledge, and empowerment as you transition to parenthood and/or grow as a family. This process will look different for everyone, and creates space for parents and babies to heal and bond. In the ongoing healthcare worker shortage, we as doulas have a unique opportunity to connect with you and get to know your specific needs in order to provide holistic and consistent care.

What brought you to birth and postpartum work?

I was drawn to birthwork because of the emphasis on working in partnership with clients and their families to ensure that they have the knowledge and support to have positive experiences in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum through empowerment. I am currently in my second year of the Midwifery Program at UBC and am loving it! I am keen to share my knowledge with clients, and to have the opportunity to focus on the emotional needs of families during this tender transition in their lives.

In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?

Self-care is important to me as a care worker, allowing me to fill my ‘cup’ so that I can give to others fully while preventing myself from burning out. I love being outdoors, and some of my favourite activities are biking, swimming, hiking, and camping. I also enjoy yoga and have recently started practicing meditation.
