What is your personal definition of “doula”?

Someone who creates a safe space for you to be vulnerable in this intense chapter and transition in your life. A person who advocates for you so your energy can be focused internally on you, your baby and family. A doula provides nourishment to both your mind and body to help you be the healthiest version of yourself while the birthing person heals and the family settle into their new life.

What brought you to birth and postpartum work?

I always had a deep interest in birth and through that discovered the history of care in postpartum and the 4th trimester. I felt there was a deep lack of support for those who had given birth in modern day society and many of the rituals around rest and time had been replaced with “bounce back” culture. When I became pregnant I felt passionate about sharing the importance of healing and support for families in the 4th trimester, especially as many people don’t have the “classic” village these days. I studied to become a postpartum doula while pregnant and felt so passionate about what I was learning.

Mixing my lived experience with all that I had learned, made me realise there was many gaps that needed to be filled when it came to supporting families and I felt called to pivot my work to support the changes I hoped to see.

In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?

Simple rest and asking for help when I need it.

Walks in the sun, hot baths with a podcast or book. A solo coffee and some journaling. Exploring with my family or friends. Comfort food.

What is a standout book, movie/tv, etc about the childbearing/parenting journey that you return to?
