What is your personal definition of “doula”?

A doula is a professional with a caring, patient and open-minded mindset who helps people during childbirth and into parenthood. They give emotional, physical, and helpful advice before, during, and after the baby is born. Being a doula is like being a fairy godmother, providing support and care to parents as well as the babies.

What brought you to birth and postpartum work?

I was drawn to birth and postpartum work because I wanted to support people during such an important time in their lives. Being a healthcare worker, I saw various parents and guardians struggling to maintain their overall wellness while raising their little ones. Learning from my experience as a mother, and as a pediatric nurse, I aimed to extend my hand and aid these individuals in feeling better and supported. On top of that, I find joy in working with children — I get satisfaction and fulfilment from their happiness and love helping them learn and grow.

In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?

In times when I feel overwhelmed as a caregiver, I make sure to prioritize myself. I set aside time for activities I enjoy, like reading or going for a walk. I also reach out to friends or family for support and to talk about how I’m feeling. Taking breaks and practicing self-care helps me stay energized and focused on helping others.

Leah provided exceptional doula services during the birth of our twin girls. Her professionalism, punctuality, and clear communication instilled confidence in us from the beginning. Throughout the process, she offered invaluable emotional support, guidance, and reassurance, helping us make informed decisions and navigate any challenges. Leah’s flexibility and adaptability were evident, and her postpartum care was greatly appreciated as we adjusted to life with newborns. We are incredibly grateful for her dedication and would highly recommend her to any expectant parents seeking a knowledgeable and compassionate doula. —  Golnaz Afkhami
