What is your personal definition of “doula”?

A ‘doula’ to me is a care worker — that’s all-in and ready to give new parents the individualized support they need and deserve after birth. Their presence is one of empathy, assurance, respect, and awe; and ultimately works to create an environment where parents can settle, rest, heal, and bond with their new little one with as much ease as possible.

What brought you to birth and postpartum work?

Working with children for the last 5 + years.

In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?

Quality time with myself, my partner, and my dog.

Steph is a highly intuitive and experienced caregiver who has given both our daughter and family a level of care that is exceptional. If we were not moving, I would do everything possible to transition her to full-time as a long-term member of our family. Steph genuinely loves the work she does and, while quietly assertive, she exudes confidence in every task she tackles. She is respectful of our routine with our daughter and adjusts where necessary to ensure our daughter is happy, rested, and healthy. Steph is proactive in attending baby classes as well as other age-appropriate activities and generally getting out to explore/run errands/adventures with our daughter. This includes meal planning for healthy baby-led weaning on a daily basis. From day one, Steph took the time to observe and learn “our way” of doing things with our daughter and invested in constructive play and building a relationship with her, in order for our daughter to feel safe and secure – not to mention very excited when in Steph’s company. Steph is invested in our daughter’s development, which is shown in her enthusiasm and delight when she achieves milestones and conquers new challenges. This also includes Steph engaging in constructive Steph is our daughter’s cheerleader and we couldn’t be happier. To be able to trust someone fully was a big step for us, and Step has demonstrated she is more than worthy with her level of experience and care she brings on a daily basis. — Megan S
