What is your personal definition of “doula”?

I define a doula as someone who blends evidence, empathy, and lived experience to hold space for families through reproductive transitions. I walk alongside families with warmth, practicality, and cultural awareness, so they can create happier, healthier, and safer beginnings for themselves and their babies. My doula practice is about helping families find a sustainable rhythm that supports whatever success looks like for them..

What brought you to birth and postpartum work?

I am a third culture kid who grew up in the United Arab Emirates and Canada, I have a special place in my heart for anyone who shares in the diaspora experience because I know firsthand the unique challenges this poses in major life transitions. I trained in Chennai, India, with an OBGYN in providing pregnancy and postpartum support to parents in a culturally aware manner. I came back to Canada with that knowledge, learned about the Canadian labour/delivery system, and began supporting immigrant and refugee families through childbirth education and health systems navigation. This has shaped my practical approach to parental support and newborn care. I have been supporting new parents in the community for 12 years, providing grounded, compassionate care to families.

Drawing from my biology and psychology education, I bring a matter-of-fact yet empathetic approach to everything I do. I researched how intersectional identities impact sexual distress, and my paper will be published in the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality! Given my areas of expertise, I have a passion for myth-busting and science communication as a means to combat misinformation. This often empowers parents to make informed decisions while avoiding unnecessary pressures.

In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?

As someone who lives with chronic/invisible conditions, I am always mindful of taking care of myself physically and mentally. This translates into my role as a caregiver! I do not take on more than I can handle, and I make sure to take intentional rest so I can recharge. I am a firm believer in prioritizing oneself so you can support others around you. It serves no one if I over-extend myself.

When I am intentionally resting, you can find me reading, knitting/crocheting, doing arts/crafts, or watching shows and movies in various languages. I am also one of those people who cooks and cleans to decompress! There are times you might find me going for a swim to rest because I find the water quieting.

What is a standout book, movie/tv, etc about the childbearing/parenting journey that you return to?

Tell us more about the ethos in your birth doula practice:

I like to describe my role as being there for your head and heart. I approach this “across time”: preparing you to approach birth with confidence, supporting you through it in the moment, and creating memories that you will look back on fondly. I want labour to be a purposeful yet manageable experience for you. One where you have control over the moment. To do this, I work with clients to create a “game plan” that empowers you physically and mentally. I also involve families and support networks so they’re ready to show up practically and socially. Because even though only one person is birthing, it truly takes a labour of love to support new parents. If you’re looking for a reliable cheerleader in your corner, I’m the birth doula for you.

Do you have a preferred location where you typically support births?

I am a hospital birth doula!

Prenatal Care
  • Free In-Person Foundations Visit → Once your contract is signed and your first-choice doula has been confirmed, your doula will visit your home for around 1+ hour so you can chat, connect, and ensure the fit feels right—for both of you!
  • Practical Support → I help clients run through the logistics of labour/birth. This can include packing their hospital bag with them, figuring out rides to the hospital, or practicing birthing positions that are comfiest! I also rehearse what sort of hands-on support clients might like during labour/birth.
  • Informational Support → I like to go through childbirth education covering the stages of labour so clients know what to expect on the day(s). Clients also trust me to research topics that they might be curious about. Drawing from my biology and science communication background, I also take the time to talk through scenarios and intervention options.
  • Emotional Support → I use soft counselling skills from my psychology background and training to ease anxiety, gain confidence, and reframe aspects of labour/birth.
  • Social Support → There is tremendous strength in everyone’s existing social network. I work with clients to figure out how they can prepare socially for labour and birth. This can include planning a meal train or divvying up roles in the house. This has also looked like setting expectations for guests!
  • Brood’s Family Membership → You will gain access to five online courses, our virtual private clubhouse, and the members’ area for ongoing education and support.
  • Postpartum Product Guide → A curated list of our top postpartum must-haves, based on what we see support families again and again.
Birth Attendance
  • Practical Support → I provide hands-on support as clients desire, like gentle massage, hip squeezes and counterpressure. I encourage and suggest movement during the stages of labour, as appropriate, to help the birthing person. In circumstances of chronic conditions, I am quick to modify positions for both comfort and “efficiency”. I also take verbal and non-verbal cues to respond to your needs! This might look like fanning you when you’re warm, or grabbing a blanket when you’re cold.
  • Informational Support → If something needs to be explained to you, I will step up to relay information to you so you can make an informed choice. At the hospital, this might also look like knowing policy, procedure, and the logistics of the hospital. I will know your birth preferences so I can advocate on your behalf.
  • Emotional Support → During labour/birth, I am a reassuring presence for my clients. I am there holding your hand, saying affirmations during each contraction! If needed, I will gently remind you of your birth preferences. Based on clients’ desires, I also debrief birth experiences to talk through any feelings coming up.
  • Social Support → This can look like drawing boundaries for staff, family, or friends. This can also look like incorporating cultural, religious or spiritual beliefs into your labour/birth experience!
Postpartum Support
  • Practical Support → This can look like the physical work that needs to be done in your home, like light housekeeping, meal prepping, bringing you water, snacks, and food. This can also be physical help that you or your baby might need, like helping with a wash and personal care or feeds. I am skilled at taking care of a newborn, if you need a reliable person (who will respect your wishes) to care for your baby. I am happy to problem-solve with you on anything that comes up!
  • Informational Support → The fourth trimester can come with a lot of uncertainty. I am good at answering your questions with empathy and clarity. I have a passion for empowering parents to make informed decisions while avoiding unnecessary pressures. This will save you a lot of money!
  • Emotional Support → I am happy to be a neutral and non-judgmental listener as you navigate the newness of parenthood. I understand how, when you are just trying to survive with a newborn, things can get pretty rough. I work with clients to navigate through this while building long-term sustainability.
  • Social Support → I encourage my clients to see how their social circles can be a major resource in building a sustainable parenting lifestyle. Leaning on your friends and family to manage tasks, chores, and even “shifts” in the household can be life-changing. You do not have to go through this alone!

Testimonials

We feel incredibly lucky to have had Joefin as our doula by our side during this journey. During the prenatal phase, she spent quality time walking us through different scenarios, both smooth and challenging, that could arise on delivery day. This helped us feel mentally prepared and confident. She also explained the doula guide in detail with practical examples and worked closely with me to create a clear and thoughtful birth plan. On the day of delivery, she arrived at the hospital at 5 AM and was an absolute pillar of support during active labour. She worked seamlessly alongside the nurses and guided me through various birthing positions, constantly adapting to what would help most. She was very attentive to my well-being and offered real-time suggestions that made a big difference. Postpartum, she visited us again, spent time with the baby, clicked some beautiful pictures with us, and shared practical tips on handling a newborn. Most importantly, she reassured us and instilled confidence that we were doing well as new parents. Her calm presence, knowledge, and genuine care made this entire experience so much more positive for us. We couldn’t have asked for a better support system. — Preeti Sharma

We had a wonderful experience with Brood Care. From the very beginning, the agency provided well-structured and insightful online material that helped us understand the entire journey from pregnancy to postpartum. It made us feel more informed and prepared as first-time parents. The coordination and communication were smooth, and we felt supported throughout the process. They paired us with an excellent doula who truly elevated our experience. We’re grateful for the professionalism and care the agency brings to such an important phase of life. Highly recommend them to any expecting parents in Vancouver. — P. S

It was lovely to see a doula in action who was so attentive, smart, and responsive to the needs of the patient. And then I see you are the president of the doula association. Makes sense! It was also lovely to work with you. — Abby, from New West Midwives
