Our Story
At Brood, we believe care is a collective effort.
We’re a community of doulas, educators, and parents who know that support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum creates stronger, healthier families. The support for our doula team is as important as our families—building capacity for care workers leads to long, fulfilling careers and in the end improves support for families.
Our Core Values
Joyful: We believe joy is an act of resistance and work to cultivate it within our work and communities.
Inclusive: We are committed to anti-racist and decolonial practices. We are gender affirming, accessible and approachable.
Evolving: We welcome and embrace change.
Mentors: We are all teachers and students and we share our knowledge with others.
Empowering: We validate the inner strength of others and rely on fact and evidence based research in our work.
Transparent: We are honest about what we know and what we have to learn.
Our Philosophy
We transform family care into a joyful, accessible, and community-centred experience. Grounded in evidence-based and inclusive care, Brood empowers families and caregivers through life’s most tender transitions.
Meet Our Founders
Lizzy Karp (She/Her)
Chief Executive Officer & Caregiver
Lizzy leads Brood’s mission to make family care accessible, impactful, and community-focused. Her own journey into family care began during the pandemic, when she welcomed her child and experienced life-changing support from doula Emma Devin. This inspired Lizzy to co-found Brood, where her background in entrepreneurship and leadership has driven its success. Lizzy’s dedication to inclusion and innovation has earned her Business in Vancouver’s 30 Under 30 award and the Wendy MacDonald Diversity Award.
Gillian Damborg (She/Her)
Chief Creative Officer & Caregiver
Gillian brings over 15 years of experience in creative direction and brand development to Brood. Her own postpartum experience with doula care from Emma during the pandemic ignited her passion for supporting families and caregivers. At Brood, Gillian uses her expertise in brand, and marketing, education, communication and design to amplify the organization’s reach and impact. As a queer, single parent, she brings her lived experience to her work, creating a culture that values caregivers and uplifts families through meaningful and inclusive support.
Emma Devin (They/Them)
Chief People & Product Officer, Full-Spectrum Doula & Caregiver
Emma is a full-spectrum doula and advocate for care workers with over a decade of experience. They have supported more than 2,500 families with prenatal education, labor support, and postpartum care. Emma’s innovative and inclusive approach to caregiving earned them Business in Vancouver’s 30 Under 30 award. At Brood, Emma leads educational initiatives and supports a team of birth workers, ensuring that families and caregivers alike experience the impact and joy of thoughtful, community-centered care.
