FAQs
What is a doula?
A doula is a trained care worker who provides non-medical, emotional, physical, and informational support to individuals and families during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. You don’t need to be planning an unmedicated birth to work with a doula. Doulas support families with prenatal education, mental and physical preparation for labour, advocacy and partner support during birth, and hands-on help after birth, such as newborn care guidance and light household support. Their role is to help families feel informed, supported, and confident as they adjust to life with a new baby.
Where do you provide in-person doula care?
We provide in-person doula care across Vancouver’s Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, and Calgary, Alberta.
Are doulas covered by insurance or MSP?
Doula care is not covered by BC MSP, but many people are able to get partial or full reimbursement through extended health benefits or workplace wellness programs. Coverage varies by provider and plan, but we regularly see successful claims through insurers such as Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Pacific Blue Cross, and Carrot. We provide detailed, insurance-ready receipts with all required information and can guide you through the claims process using our insurance coverage guide.
How far in advance should I book a doula?
It’s generally recommended to book a birth or postpartum doula as early as possible, ideally in the first trimester. Booking early allows us to thoughtfully match you with the right Brood doula and ensure availability around your estimated due date and postpartum period. That said, it’s never too late to inquire — we’ll always do our best to support you if space allows.
