Pregnancy can be exciting, deeply meaningful and at times wonderfully surprising. It can also bring challenges you never expected.
One of the things I loved most about my own pregnancy was that every day I noticed something new—often surprising and unexpected. I’ve always loved finding joy in life’s little moments, and pregnancy gave me plenty of reasons to smile. Unless, of course, it was my third trimester and I was trying to stand up from a low chair—that wasn’t nearly as funny in the moment.
There were mornings I’d wake up with a heightened sense of smell or a completely unexpected craving, while other days I suddenly couldn’t stand the thought of a food I’d loved only a few days earlier. Every day brought something new, and I found myself constantly curious as my body adapted and my baby reached another milestone in growth and development.
Of course, not every change feels magical.
For some, pregnancy is a season of energy and a deeper connection with their body. For others, it can bring persistent nausea, back or pelvic pain, interrupted sleep, anxiety, fatigue, or simply a sense that their body no longer feels familiar. Most people experience a little of both so if your pregnancy hasn’t looked or felt the way you imagined, you’re certainly not alone.
Understanding why these changes happen can help make them feel a little less overwhelming, and finding supportive ways to care for yourself can make a meaningful difference.
One of the reasons acupuncture has been used for centuries during pregnancy is that treatment evolves alongside your changing body. The goals of care in the first trimester often look very different from those in the third. As pregnancy progresses, treatments are adjusted to reflect what you’re experiencing in that moment, recognizing that your needs may change from week to week.
Pregnancy is also the beginning of building your support team. Alongside your primary care provider, your doula, pelvic floor physiotherapist, and the people you trust most, many families choose acupuncture as part of their care. Rather than replacing conventional medical care, acupuncture complements it by offering individualized support throughout pregnancy while also helping you prepare for the transition into childbirth.
Every pregnancy is unique, and every acupuncture treatment should be, too. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach, treatments are tailored to your symptoms, stage of pregnancy, health history, and goals.
Why pregnancy can feel so different from week to week
One of the remarkable things about pregnancy is just how quickly your body adapts.
Hormones soften ligaments to prepare your pelvis for birth. Blood volume increases dramatically to support your growing baby. Your center of gravity gradually shifts, changing how you stand, walk, and move. Your heart, lungs, digestive system, and even your sleep patterns are constantly adjusting to meet the needs of pregnancy.
These changes are extraordinary—but they can also contribute to many of the symptoms people experience along the way.
Pregnancy is also one of the few times in life when your body is changing so quickly that it’s almost impossible to compare one week with the next. The symptoms you’re experiencing today may shift tomorrow, and new ones may appear just as you’re celebrating the old ones disappearing. It can be unpredictable, but it can also be a beautiful reminder of just how adaptable the human body truly is.
Understanding what’s happening inside your body doesn’t necessarily make nausea or back pain disappear, but it can offer reassurance that these changes often have a purpose. It can also help you recognize when it’s time to reach out for additional support.
What to expect at your pregnancy acupuncture appointment
If you’ve never had acupuncture before, it’s completely normal to feel curious—or even a little nervous. One of the most common things I hear is, “I’ve never done this before. What should I expect?”
Your first appointment begins with a conversation. We’ll talk about your pregnancy, your health history, how you’ve been feeling, and what you’re hoping to get out of treatment. Because every pregnancy is unique, your treatment plan is tailored specifically to you and may change as your pregnancy progresses.
You’ll then relax comfortably on a treatment table supported with pillows, cushions, and bolsters to help you feel completely at ease. The acupuncture needles themselves are incredibly fine—much thinner than those used for blood work or vaccinations—and most people feel very little during treatment.
I always remind my patients that nothing during treatment should feel painful or uncomfortable. My goal is for you to leave feeling like a lotus flower floating on water—lighter, calmer and deeply cared for.
Once the needles are in place, it’s common to experience a feeling of warmth, heaviness, tingling, or deep relaxation while you rest quietly for about 30 minutes. Many people find this is one of the few times during the week when they have permission to simply slow down. Some even drift off to sleep.
Before you leave, we’ll talk about how you responded to treatment, discuss any questions you have, and make a plan together for ongoing care if appropriate. Depending on your symptoms and stage of pregnancy, your practitioner may recommend follow-up visits or provide simple self-care suggestions you can continue at home.
Every appointment is designed to meet you exactly where you are that day—with compassion, curiosity, and respect.
Nausea and Morning Sickness
Despite its name, morning sickness doesn’t always happen in the morning—and for some people it continues well beyond the first trimester.
For some, nausea is mild but persistent. For others, it can make eating, working or simply getting through the day feel overwhelming. For some people these symptoms settle after the first trimester, while others continue to experience nausea throughout pregnancy. Every experience is different, and every experience is valid.
Research suggests acupuncture may help reduce pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting for some people. During treatment, your comfort always comes first. Whether you need to change positions frequently, sit instead of lie down, or simply take a quiet moment to rest, your treatment is adapted to meet you where you are.
Back and Pelvic Pain
As pregnancy progresses, your posture changes, your abdominal muscles stretch, and the muscles supporting your spine work harder than ever before.
It’s no surprise that low back pain is one of the most common discomforts during pregnancy. Rib pain, round ligament pain, and tension through the upper back and shoulders can also develop as your body continues to adapt to your growing baby.
Pelvic girdle pain, pubic symphysis pain, hip pain, or discomfort around the sacrum can make everyday activities feel surprisingly difficult. Walking, climbing stairs, turning over in bed, or even getting dressed may suddenly require much more effort than they once did.
Acupuncture may help reduce muscle tension, encourage relaxation, and support the body’s natural pain-modulating systems. Many people also find that treatment gives them an opportunity to slow down and reconnect with their body—something that’s often difficult during the busyness of preparing for a new baby.
Sometimes that hour of rest is just as valuable as the treatment itself. Pregnancy asks so much of your body, and carving out time to simply be cared for can be restorative in its own right.
Insomnia and Poor Sleep
Sleep often changes throughout pregnancy.
Sometimes it’s physical discomfort, frequent trips to the bathroom, heartburn, or an active baby. Other times it’s a busy mind that’s processing all the excitement, anticipation, and uncertainty that can come with preparing for birth.
Acupuncture appointments are intentionally calming. Many people describe leaving treatment feeling more relaxed and grounded, giving both body and mind an opportunity to slow down.
Anxiety and Emotional Well-Being
Pregnancy brings change in every sense of the word. Even during joyful pregnancies, it’s natural to have questions about birth, parenting, relationships, work or simply how life will change in the months ahead.
Acupuncture appointments offer more than physical care. They provide dedicated time to check in with yourself, to be listened to without feeling rushed and to pause in a season that often feels very busy.
Sometimes the most meaningful part of an acupuncture appointment isn’t only the excitement or anticipation of the treatment. It’s having an hour where someone asks how you are doing. Pregnancy appointments naturally focus on your baby’s growth and development. Acupuncture creates space to care for the person growing that baby, too.
You don’t have to carry every question or worry on your own.
If you’re experiencing persistent anxiety, depression, or emotional distress during pregnancy, please let your healthcare provider know. You deserve compassionate, comprehensive support.
Preparing for Childbirth
As your due date approaches, your care often begins to shift from supporting pregnancy to preparing for labour. Many people choose acupuncture during the final weeks of pregnancy as part of their birth preparation. Treatments at this stage focus on supporting your body’s natural readiness for labour while helping you feel rested, balanced and connected to your body as birth approaches.
During the final weeks of pregnancy, appointments often also become an opportunity to talk through birth preferences, discuss what to expect as labour approaches, and ask the
questions that naturally arise before meeting your baby. Having time to prepare both physically and emotionally can help people feel more grounded as they approach birth.
Although acupuncture cannot predict exactly when labour will begin or determine how your birth will unfold, many families appreciate having dedicated time to slow down, ask questions, and feel supported during this important transition.
As a former doula, one of the greatest lessons I learned is that birth isn’t just a physical event—it’s emotional and, for many people, deeply spiritual. It’s a day you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
I’ve learned that birth is rarely remembered simply because of how it unfolded. It’s remembered because of how you felt while moving through it. Feeling safe, supported and cared for can leave a lasting impression long after your baby arrives.
A Final Thought
Pregnancy is full of firsts. The first flutter. The first kick.
The first time you hear your baby’s heartbeat.
The first time you realize your life is about to change forever.
It’s also the first opportunity to learn something that becomes invaluable in parenthood: accepting support.
Whether that support comes from your maternity care provider, your doula, your family, your community, or complementary therapies like acupuncture, you deserve to feel cared for every step of the way.
Because caring for yourself isn’t separate from caring for your growing family. It’s where that care begins.
