Brood Letter 06 | It’s a Family Affair

by Brood

Hey ya’ll,

It’s so nice to have you here. If we haven’t met, I’m Lizzy, co-founder of Brood. During this season of celebrating many forms of love and family, I’ve been thinking about my own family structure. I’m privileged to have my partner Pat, who I’ve been married to for 9 years, and we have a hilarious two year old named Hank and a fur baby named Farley. We have parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, cousins, aunties and uncles across North America. Weave in friends-like-family, from many phases of our lives – and their partners, kids, and dogs too.

This constellation of chosen, built and inherited family members make us who we are. It’s the blood in our bodies, photos on the wall, songs playing in our kitchens, the inside jokes that never get old. It’s the heirloom on the bookshelf, the birthday cards in the mail, the Friday night traditions. Maybe you are spending this weekend with your family, or reflecting on the braid of feelings and the family you’re building. At Brood we celebrate the complexities of family—especially with the shifting priorities of care—as we enter different phases of our lives. We celebrate the fact that not all families are born into each other, but webbed and woven over a lifetime.

I love to share my feelings through playlists, and made this one for you and your families! We’re also excited to share some updates from Brood land, including summer birth and postpartum openings, a brand new care package and the news that we are Living Wage certified!

Take care of you and your fam,

Lizzy & the Brood Care team

Committing to our doula team with a Living Wage

We’re thrilled to be the first Doula Care Agency in BC to become a certified Living Wage Employer!

As Emma said so powerfully “Doulas are historically undervalued, underpaid – much like all care work and feminized labor. Brood was founded by people who have experienced life-changing doula care and those who have provided care for over a decade. Since day one, Brood has been committed to paying a living wage. One of the pillars of making doula care accessible to all is to make sustainable, long-term careers for these care workers through living wages, mentorship and community. If we want to care for all, we need to take care of those who care for us.”

We’re proud to be one of 400 Living Wage Employers in BC!
