Brood Letter 10 | Doing it for the Dads

by Brood

This past week I had the special opportunity to watch my dad, Tracy Karp, accept an award honouring his impact working as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner in the NICU for over 40 years (and counting!). In a room filled with his peers and friends, all who were dedicated to saving the lives of tiny, tiny babies, I saw my dad in a completely new light. I learned that he has cared for thousands of babies with a curiosity, compassion, professionalism and humor that has left a lasting impact on families moving through intense early care, as well as the practitioners he collaborates with.

It’s surreal hearing your parent’s colleagues saying all the nice things to their face, through laughter and tears, and also made me think about my own interest in family care, and those who provide it. For those of us in relationship with our dads, what stories about care do we take from them?

My parents met working in a Children’s Hospital (in a NICU), so it’s not a stretch for me to say my story begins with care work. I used to joke that I was the black sheep of our familythe one member who didn’t go into the medical field, and instead marketing, media and community building. But now, as one of the minds and spirits behind Brood, I’m understanding my own call to supporting new families. After the award ceremony and a celebratory toast, I asked Tracy what he thought I inherited from him in my professional life. His simple response: “Your commitment to doing good for others.” Cue the tears.

Whether you’re celebrating a dad you parent alongside (special shout out to Pat, Brad and all the Brood daddios!), an influential father-figure, remembering someone you’ve lost or honoring how you father yourself – cheers.
