Brood Letter 11 | Keeping Our Cool

by Brood

Hey there, Summer Brooders!

As the sweet scent of summer fills the air, we find ourselves immersed in a season of adventure. For many of our Brood families, summer hits during the 4th Trimester, a big change in lifestyle for many folks. While this season brings lots of socializing, BBQs, park hangs and happy hours, it can also be a pretty serious adjustment for new parents. Maybe it’s gone from back-to-back beach hangs, to worrying about staying cool with your new baby, completely avoiding the sun.

Lizzy shares openly about her very hard first summer as a parentthe whiplash of getting into a groove with a four month old baby, combined with a dramatic and intense heat dome. Days were spent inside, hiding from the sun, focusing on hydrating and nursing little Hank as much as possible. The sleep deprivation and isolation felt more raw as she didn’t have the same access to pool dips, patio drinks and air conditioned movie theaters.

Was it the realization that summers would be different in early parenting? The intensity of heat safety for babies? A dash of climate anxiety? Welp, all of the above.

The mess of emotions and logistics, as well as physical and mental impacts of heat can feel hard to wade through. Isn’t summer the peak of the year? Where magic is made!? We’re here to say it’s okay if this season feels tough. Give yourself a chance to feel bummed, feel some grief, and adjust expectations. Then (metaphorically), turn your face towards the sun!

Check out our latest blog posts linked below, starting with learning about summer safety for you and your baby, and making a few small changes to help stay hydrated. Next, plan a few small outings with your community.. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll in the park, a picnic by the beach as the sun sets, or a backyard BBQ in the shade, these seemingly small and normal outings can be serious core memory makers. Maybe it’s finding that friend with in-home air con and having a little staycation or indoor hang. Share your summer snapshots with us! We love seeing you and your Brood.

With love,

Emma, Gill, Lizzy and the Brood Care Team
