What is your personal definition of “doula”?

To me, a doula is a steady, compassionate presence throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. A doula does not replace medical care, nor does she lead the process; she walks alongside. She listens without judgment, offers evidence-based information, and supports informed, conscious decision-making, so families feel confident and respected in their choices.

My definition of a doula is rooted in presence: being there physically, emotionally, and intentionally. It is about creating a safe, grounded space where the pregnant person can trust their body, their intuition, and their inner strength, even when birth feels intense or unpredictable.

A doula advocates for autonomy, dignity, and consent. She helps translate information, protect the birthing person’s voice, and gently remind them that this experience belongs to them. At its core, being a doula is an act of care. It is holding space, offering calm in moments of uncertainty, and ensuring no one feels alone while crossing one of life’s most transformative thresholds.

What brought you to birth and postpartum work?

I used to work as a Software Engineer, a career full of logic and structure. But when I learned about doulas and the profound impact they have on families, I felt a calling I couldn’t ignore. I realized I wanted a purpose that went beyond screens and code, a way to leave my mark in the world. Supporting people in one of the most vulnerable and transformative moments of their lives felt like the path I was meant to walk.

I became a doula to provide information, to give voice and choices to those in labour, to stand beside them with presence, care, and guidance, and to help transform birth into an experience that is safe, empowering, and beautiful. I do this to challenge unnecessary interventions, break stigmas, and create space for each family to feel seen, respected, and supported.

For me, this work is more than a profession; it’s a way to make the world a little gentler, a little kinder, and to touch the lives of the families I have the privilege to walk alongside.

In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?

I care for myself by treating rest as part of the work, not a reward for surviving it. I tuck in little pauses between births, honour my limits, and listen to my own body with kindness.

I’m gently supported by my cat, Puck, who reminds me every day to slow down, stretch out, and savour the small soft moments. I sprinkle little bits of magic into my days, baking bread, doodling, writing, and simply doing the things that make my heart feel light and happy.

What is a standout book, movie/tv, etc about the childbearing/parenting journey that you return to?
TV
  • The Business of Being Born → a thoughtful documentary exploring childbirth practices, empowering parents with information, and celebrating humanized birth.
  • Babies → a poetic look at the early months of life across different cultures, showing the universality and beauty of new beginnings.
BOOKS
  • Out on a Limb by Hannah Bonam-Young → a light, accessible fiction that gently captures the journey of pregnancy. I love how it highlights the importance of a caring support network and a strong partnership. It’s a great read for book lovers who want something light, yet relatable, that you can identify with in small ways.

Tell us more about the ethos in your birth doula practice:

Birth is not something that simply happens to you; it is something you actively live and create. My role is to walk beside you with gentle guidance, a steady presence, and unwavering support, honouring each step of your journey. Every family deserves to be truly seen, heard, and respected. I hold deep respect for your choices and trust in your intuition, knowing that you are the expert of your own experience. My work weaves together evidence-based knowledge and the art of deep listening. I stay grounded in the latest research, while keeping my heart centred on what matters most: you, your baby, and the unique path you are shaping together.

Do you have a preferred location where you typically support births?

I feel comfortable supporting births in both hospital and home settings. My approach adapts to each environment, whether it involves advocacy and support through medical interventions in hospitals or providing calm, present guidance in the more intimate home setting. I attend home births only when assisted, never alone, ensuring safety, collaboration, and a strong support network for the birthing family.

Testimonials

We reached out to Brood to coordinate last-minute postpartum support after some exceptional circumstances in our son’s delivery. From the moment we contacted this team, we were met with unbelievable kindness and support – truly, we felt like we were immediately given a village when we had none. We aren’t sure how to put into words how grateful we are for the care we’ve received from our main doula, Julia. Unbelievable at her job, Julia is warm, responsive, knowledgeable, and immediately made us and our baby feel so cared for and comfortable. She’s truly been an integral part of our transition to parenthood, and we aren’t sure how we would’ve done this without her. We also had the absolute privilege of meeting a few other doulas from Brood – Ash and Lindsey – who were also incredible caregivers. Thank you to this team for all that you do. We will forever remember you as part of this precious time of our lives. To other families considering doula care, you truly cannot go wrong with this lovely group of people. — Nica L

We had a wonderful experience with Júlia during our birth. Júlia was our support on the day of my delivery. It was the first time we met, and even so, we immediately felt a connection. She was extremely professional, attentive, and compassionate, bringing a sense of safety and emotional support not only to me, but also to my husband and my mother, who were with me. Her presence made all the difference in allowing the birth to be experienced with greater calm, respect, and confidence. — Leticia

I wanted to thank you again for all your support during the birth and for the care you showed my mom as well. Thank you so much for the wonderful photos — they’re a memory we’ll cherish for a lifetime. I’m so happy and grateful that you did this for us. Truly, thank you, thank you, thank you — I loved them, loved them, loved them! — Mari
