What is your personal definition of “doula”?
To me, being a doula is all about holding space—physically, emotionally, and sometimes spiritually—for people as they move through one of the most transformational experiences of their lives.
It’s about walking alongside you, offering support, information, and encouragement so that you can feel confident, calm, and empowered—no matter your birth. Sometimes, that looks like breathing through contractions together. Sometimes, it’s making sure your partner eats something. Sometimes, it’s just being a quiet, grounding presence when everything feels intense. I’m not there to replace anyone—just to support the whole birthing team and help make the experience as positive and connected as possible. I’m a familiar face in the unknown.
At the heart of it, my role as a doula is to remind you that you know your body and that you get to write your own birth story. I’m here to help you feel supported, informed, and seen along the way.
What brought you to birth and postpartum work?
It was mainly my own experience and that feeling—that overwhelming sense of needing more support, more understanding—that was one of the driving factors in my decision to become a birth doula. It wasn’t fair to go through such an intense and transformative experience without the right kind of support. Your partner, no matter how much they want to help, can’t always know exactly what you need or how to help you in those moments. I knew that I wanted to provide the kind of support to other families that I felt was missing for me.
This experience, with all its ups and downs, made me realize how important it is to have someone who has all the inside information, can advocate for you, guide you, and hold space for you during such a vulnerable time. It’s what I’m passionate about now—ensuring that no one has to go through their birth and postpartum alone.
In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?
Caring for others starts with caring for myself. As a doula, it’s easy to pour everything into supporting my clients, but I’ve learned that I can’t show up fully if I’m running on empty. So I’m protecting my rest. I’m making space to move my body and took up a challenge of training for a half marathon this year! I’m learning to set boundaries with love, not guilt. And I’m reminding myself that joy comes in all forms—slow mornings, jumping puddles with my toddler and time with family.
This work is heart work. And I’m at my best when I’m grounded and with peace within.

Tell us more about the ethos in your birth doula practice:
At the heart of my doula practice is the belief that every birthing person deserves to feel safe, seen, and empowered during their journey into parenthood. Birth is not just a medical event—it’s a deeply personal, transformative experience. My role is to create a space where you feel grounded in your power, informed in your choices, and deeply supported—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Above all, my ethos is about connection. I build relationships based on trust, deep listening, and mutual respect. I consider it an honour to witness birth, and I hold that space with the utmost care and devotion.

Testimonials
I just want to start by saying Brood is hands down the most caring, knowledgeable, responsive, and trusting care agency that we have ever encountered. Nikola, in particular, brought such warmth, expertise, and presence to our experience. The personalized service she gave us—from in-person birth support to postpartum doula care—made every day of this process an absolute joy. Her knowledge and attention to every detail ensured our newborn was healthy, happy, and set up for the critical first few months of her life. We cannot say enough good things about the Brood staff. There is nothing more important than making sure a child is brought into this world safely and receives the best care for the gentle beginning of their life. We absolutely love the Brood family and are so very thankful that we found them and had the joyful experience they brought to this already joyful part of our lives. They enter your life seamlessly and curate each experience with your goals and well-being at the top of their list. Thank you, Brood—and thank you, Nikola—for everything. You simply are the best. We take a bow to you 🙂 — From everyone: Presthaya, Conrad, Baby Freya (& Mary).
We used Brood’s doula-matching services to support us in finding a birth doula. We found the process to be easy & intuitive. After a quick interview of our wishes & needs, we were given 3 potential matches, and ultimately went with Nikki, who we were very happy with! For those who aren’t aware, there is sliding scale pricing available. We are still using the membership to utilize the online course content as well. — Kim T
From the moment we settled into our recovery room, we felt completely cared for—every detail, every moment, thoughtfully tended to. We are incredibly grateful to Nikola for helping keep us nourished through the long hours and, especially, for being an anchor of support for my husband when we were briefly separated before surgery. Nikola truly went above and beyond—not just during labour, but in the weeks that followed. Her care didn’t end when our baby was born. As first-time parents, we found her availability to talk through postpartum questions absolutely invaluable. I’m also thankful for the small, smart tips she shared ahead of time—like recommending the perfect post-op underwear! What stood out most was Nikola’s ability to anticipate our needs. She always seemed to know exactly what would help, before we even asked. Whether it was lending us parenting books, providing a TENS machine, or sharing her own experience, she had the right resources at the right time. When labour pains began, she gave me a calming foot rub that we now fondly refer to as “Doula Magic.” And she even captured our very first photos as a new family—an incredibly thoughtful gesture we’ll always treasure. Nikola’s proactive care and gentle presence made us feel genuinely supported through every stage. From start to finish, she helped make our journey into parenthood smoother, more confident, and deeply comforting. We can’t recommend her highly enough. — Frances & Bobby
