High-Protein Breakfasts & Snacks for Pregnancy, Postpartum, and Beyond

by | Jan 19, 2026

If you’re on the internet at all, you know every dietitian, nutritionist, and influencer is talking about getting more protein in your diet. But why exactly do we need it during pregnancy, and how much should we aim for?

Protein supports your body’s tissue repair, hormone production, and immune function—and during pregnancy and postpartum, those needs go way up. Eating enough protein helps support baby’s development, stabilizes your energy, and helps your body recover after birth. It’s also key for making milk if you’re chestfeeding.

Most experts recommend that pregnant folks aim for about 75 to 100 grams of protein per day, depending on your weight, activity level, and trimester. That can feel like a lot—but spread throughout the day with meals and snacks, it adds up more easily than you might think.

Here are some simple, delicious options that come together fast and actually fill you up. Many of them can be eaten one-handed (we see you, multitaskers).

Breakfasts That Stick With You

Savory Scramble Bowl

Scrambled eggs with garlicky sautéed kale (or spinach) and roasted sweet potato or leftover rice. To sauté the greens: cook 2 cups of chopped kale in olive oil with 1 minced garlic clove until wilted. Add a spoonful of hummus or pesto on top for extra flavor.

Greek Yogurt Parfait

Full-fat Greek yogurt layered with berries, flax or chia seeds, and a sprinkle of granola. Add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup if you need a little sweetness.

Tofu Breakfast Stir-Fry

Crumble firm tofu and sauté with baby spinach, garlic, and turmeric. Add soy sauce or coconut aminos, and serve with whole grain toast or wrapped in a warm tortilla.

Protein Smoothie

Blend 1 cup milk (any kind) with a scoop of protein powder, 1 banana, ½ cup frozen berries, 1 tbsp nut butter, and a spoonful of chia or hemp seeds.

Egg Muffins

Whisk 6 eggs with chopped spinach, bell peppers, and cheese. Pour into a greased muffin tin and bake at 350°F for 20–25 minutes. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Want extra protein? Add in some extra egg whites from a carton!

Overnight Oats with Protein Boost

Combine ½ cup rolled oats with ½ cup Greek yogurt, ¼ cup milk, 1 tbsp chia seeds, and a scoop of protein powder. Refrigerate overnight. Top with fruit or nuts.

Snacks That Fuel (Not Fizzle)

Boiled Eggs & Avocado

Slice and sprinkle with salt and sesame seeds. Add crackers for crunch or wrap in a lettuce leaf.

Nut Butter + Fruit or Rice Cakes

Apples, bananas, or plain rice cakes with almond, peanut, or sunflower butter.

Cottage Cheese Bowl

Top with pineapple, peaches, or cucumber and everything bagel seasoning. Or mix with chopped tomato and avocado.

Roasted Chickpeas or Edamame

Toss canned chickpeas with olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, and salt. Roast at 400°F for 30–40 minutes, shaking halfway through.

Hummus Plate

Pair with whole grain crackers, sliced bell peppers, carrots, or cucumber spears.

Lentil or Chickpea Salad Cups

Mix rinsed canned lentils or chickpeas with olive oil, lemon, chopped parsley, and a pinch of salt. Serve in romaine leaves or with crackers. Love fish? Add canned salmon!

Tuna or Salmon Packets

Single-serve pouches with cucumber slices or multigrain crackers make a quick, no-cook snack.

Trail Mix (DIY or Store-bought)

Mix almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, and dark chocolate chips.

String Cheese or Babybel + Fruit
Great for on-the-go or stashing in the fridge door.

Chia Pudding

Mix 2 tbsp chia seeds with ½ cup milk, stir well, and refrigerate overnight. Add protein powder, cocoa, or berries before serving.

Tips for Staying Nourished

  • Keep snacks in your bag, your bedside drawer, and anywhere you might need a boost.
  • Try combining protein + fiber + fat for staying power.
  • If mornings are rough, prep the night before (smoothie packs, egg muffins, trail mix).
  • Don’t underestimate the power of leftovers for breakfast. Warm stew? Last night’s taco meat? Go for it.
