5 Postpartum Supplements to Help with Healing

by Brood

Pregnancy and labor take a significant toll on your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Even before you give birth, in the third trimester, you pass important nutrients to your baby to ensure your newborn has enough to get them through the first 6 months—but it often leaves you depleted of those same nutrients at a time when you really do need them. It’s no wonder that the postpartum period (also referred to as the fourth trimester) benefits from rest and support—including nutrient support from your diet and postpartum supplements.

A nutrient-dense diet is important to support healing (and milk production if you’re chest or breastfeeding), but it isn’t always easy to prioritize when sleep is hard to come by and your routine has been upended. Consider a postpartum supplement to help fill any nutrient gaps to keep you on the road to recovery.

Here are 5 postpartum supplements that can help you in your fourth trimester:

DHA is an Omega-3 Fatty Acid and helps to counter pregnancy-induced changes to the maternal brain, while also supporting the baby’s brain development if chest or breastfeeding. Maternal attention and cognition function postpartum have also been correlated with levels of DHA in breast milk, so supplement with at least 100 mg DHA daily for the first year postpartum.

Iron is a crucial component in the production of hemoglobin, the protein within your red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen throughout your body. Experiencing low iron levels (due to low dietary intake, or blood loss during childbirth) can result in low hemoglobin, and therefore iron-deficiency anemia. Low hemoglobin levels post-labor is also connected to a higher risk of developing post-traumatic stress symptoms. Supplement with 10 to 30 mg of iron daily during postpartum (and especially during the lactation period) to replenish stores and prevent deficiency. Low iron or iron-deficiency anemia may require higher doses—but check with your doctor before supplementing with higher levels of the mineral.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A, which is abundant in animal-based foods, is essential for infant brain development, and can be passed to your newborn through breastmilk. Our docs recommend preformed Vitamin A, which is more bioavailable than Beta Carotene, the form typically found in generic supplements. Our Postpartum supplement provides 540 mcg of Vitamin A, helping to ensure that both you and your baby receive the essential nutrients you need.

Your calcium intake should be maintained or even increased when nursing, with a recommended daily intake of 1,300 to 1,500 mg. Calcium and Vitamin D can also be protective against postpartum depression and Magnesium can help with reducing anxiety and promoting better sleep. This trio—Calcium, Magnesium and Vitamin D—work especially well when taken together.

Choline is important for early fetal development and memory capacity, and has an increased recommended daily intake of 550 mg when nursing. Higher levels of choline may benefit maternal cognitive health as well, and reduce inflammation if you’re nursing for a smoother recovery process.

Lactation postpartum support

If you’re hoping to chest or breastfeed, herbal galactogogues can help to boost milk production. These include fenugreek, moringa, and blessed thistle and can be found in Bird&Be’s Postpartum with Lactation Boost, and have substantial research backing their efficacy.

PCOS postpartum support

Women with PCOS may have lower milk supply due to higher levels of androgens. Inositol is a safe remedy that can be used pre-pregnancy, during pregnancy, and postpartum to control androgen levels and regulate milk supply.

Just as your prenatal vitamin was instrumental in meeting your nutritional needs before and during pregnancy, a supplement specifically formulated for the postpartum period can be equally beneficial.
