Brood Letter 12 | Fight Those End of Summer Scaries

Summer is a lot of work for parentschildcare wrangling, summer camp sign-ups, packing and unpacking for trips and adventures, laundry that never ends (hello berry stains!) and a lot of socialising (some with people we want to see, others not so much). Honestly, I feel immediately lighter when the weather cools down and I know that fall is around the corner. It might be that I’m looking forward to relief from constant heat waves, the forest fires and smoke, and the incessant buzz of our very loud air conditioner (bless you AC)! But it’s also because fall always has that back-to-school, new year kinda feeling. I get excited about turning inward a little more, getting in a good deep clean, the shorter days and for some yummy new fall forward recipes (looking at you, apple season!). It’s time for some more consistent routines, slowing down, taking stock of what we have and planning ahead.

This season for us at Brood is all about the early parenthood phasecelebrating and supporting all the new parents in our community and making sure they have what they need to confidently move through this new time of life. One of the ways you can really set yourself up for success is doing a little work and planning BEFORE the baby arrives. So many people come to us in a state of panicthey are in serious need of help with their new babies in those first few weeks and months postpartum. 

We also see a lot of non-birthing parents (hello “daddys”) who are in a state of well… shock. So often when you’re not the one carrying the baby, your journey really starts the day the baby arrives. We are here to help you get ahead of that! There is so much you can do to support yourself in the early parenthood and postpartum period NOW. What, you ask? Well, there are prenatal classes, online courses and lots of community support available from us at Brood, and many other organisations. We’ve also created something specifically for dads (of all kinds). Here’s what one mom-to-be had to say about our Doing it for the Dad’s Workshop and Prenatal Happy Hour, coming up in September:

“My partner needs some real talk on what to expect and how to support me. I feel seen knowing that there is a prenatal workshop just for him that I don’t have to be involved in or lead. So far it’s been a lot on me… and not so much on him!”
This is exactly why we created this workshop. There is NO shame in feeling somewhat out of the loop or under prepared. We can’t possibly know everythingbut we can learn how to support ourselves and one another through the roller coaster, better. So, sign up your partner or sign yourself up dad! We’ve got you and yes, you are KENOUGH. 

Other things you can do? Hire a doula today. Worried about the cash investment? Add it to your baby shower registry! People want to help you help yourselves, and the gift of support and community is the best gift you can get. 

We hope you get to squeeze in a few more swims, pop a few more berries in your mouth and begin to ease into the stillness of the seasons to come.
