What is your personal definition of “doula”?

At the heart of doula work is a deep respect for each families autonomy, intuition, and individual journey. We help families explore the benefits, risks, and alternatives available to them while honoring their values and choices.

For me, being a doula means holding space with compassion, protecting the birthing persons’ experience, and helping families feel seen, heard, and supported as they welcome their baby. It is about walking alongside families, reminding them of their own wisdom and strength, and ensuring they know they do not have to navigate this transformative experience alone.

What brought you to birth and postpartum work?

I was drawn to birth work nearly 25 years ago, when I began to understand just how profoundly a womans’ experience of birth can shape her and her family. As a mother of four, I know that birth is more than simply the arrival of a baby, it is a moment of transformation, vulnerability, strength and becoming.

My path has organically grown to include postpartum care as well. The weeks after birth can be beautiful, overwhelming, tender and exhausting all at once. I believe families deserve just as much care as they adjust to life with their new baby. That can simply mean offering a helping hand, sometimes a place to land emotionally and sometimes, simply making space for a parent to rest and find their footing.

In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?

Birth and postpartum work asks us to be present, emotionally available and grounded for families during their most vulnerable moments. To do that well, I need to recognize my own limits, make space for rest and remember; I cannot pour from an empty cup. For me, self care isn’t always about doing more or finding the perfect routine, it’s about setting boundaries, making room for the people and things that restore me and giving myself permission to slow down when I need to.

Having the support from my doula partner, Rachel, gives me someone who understands the unique demands of this work. We can share experiences, talk through the hard moments, encourage one another and remind each other that we are human too.

Tell us more about the ethos in your birth doula practice:

Here are a few things that drive me as a doula….

  • Continuous Presence – staying grounded in the room to reduce fear, ease pain and advocate for a familys’ birth preferences and goals.
  • Partner Support – involving and guiding the birth partner so the entire team feels connected and capable.
  • Holistic Care – honoring the physical, emotional and spiritual journey of welcoming a new baby

What makes my approach unique….

As a full spectrum Doula, I have the unique vantage point of supporting families through the prenatal, labour and birth and postpartum periods. This insight allows me to not only get to know families through the stages but also, allows me to curate a personal experience for everyone in my care.

Do you have a preferred location where you typically support births?

I have no environment preference and am confident and secure in every birth environment

Prenatal Care

My prenatal care is about building relationships, creating trust, and helping families feel more confident as they approach birth. I want our time together to feel relaxed, personal, and grounded in real life; a space where you can ask questions, share your worries, explore your hopes, and be completely yourself.

We talk about your vision for birth, your preferences, and the many ways birth can unfold. We explore comfort measures, movement and positioning, breathing, coping tools, and practical ways your partner can support you. I offer evidence-based information, share my experience, and help you navigate your options without judgement or pressure. My role isn’t to tell you how to birth, but to help you understand your choices, trust yourself, and feel supported in whatever path your birth takes.

There is room for the practical and the emotional, for honest conversations, laughter, and even the moments when things feel uncertain. I want your partner to feel included and confident too, not just watching from the sidelines, but knowing how to be an active part of your support team.

Ultimately, my prenatal care is about preparing you not for a perfect birth, but for your birth… helping you feel informed, connected, capable, and held as you move toward one of life’s biggest transitions.

With every Brood Birth doula you get:

  • Free In-Person Foundations Visit → Once your contract is signed and your first-choice doula has been confirmed, your doula will visit your home for around 1+ hour so you can chat, connect, and ensure the fit feels right—for both of you!
  • Two to Three Unhurried Prenatal Visits → Approximately two hours each, allowing us to truly get to know one another and build trust and confidence.
  • Birth Preparation → Personalized to each family’s unique needs, values, hopes, and concerns. Together, we’ll explore your preferences while providing evidence-based education on pregnancy, labour, comfort measures, medical interventions, induction, cesarean birth, VBAC, newborn care, and postpartum recovery, so you feel informed and confident as you prepare for birth.
  • Birth Plan Guidance → Helping to create flexible preferences that support decision-making while honouring the unpredictability of birth.
  • Partner Preparation → Encouraging and educating partners to become “birth superheroes”.
  • Hands-on Comfort Practicing → Including labour positions, breathing techniques, movement, labour tools and coping strategies.
  • Continuous Support (between visits) → Via text, email or phone to answer questions and navigate decisions as they come up.
  • Community Referrals → Access valuable local resources like prenatal classes, lactation consultants, and mental health support.
  • Brood’s Family Membership → Gain exclusive access to five online courses covering prenatal and newborn care, plus join our virtual private clubhouse and member area for downloadable resources.

Birth Attendance

When labor begins, we stay connected and I help you navigate what you’re experiencing, offering suggestions for comfort, movement, positioning, breathing, and rest. When it’s time for me to join you at the hospital, I bring a grounded, familiar presence into your birth space, helping you feel safe, and supported.

Throughout labor, I will follow your lead. Sometimes that means hands-on comfort measures, helping you change positions, or offering words of encouragement. Other times, it means protecting the quiet, holding space, or simply sitting beside you when you need someone steady in the room.

I also support your partner, helping them feel confident and involved rather than unsure of what to do. I can offer information about options and help you formulate questions for your care providers, so you feel better equipped to make informed decisions. I respect your choices and your birth preferences while remaining flexible as things change.

I stay with you through birth and for approximately two hours afterward, helping you settle in, supporting early bonding and feeding as desired, and making sure you feel cared for before I leave.

Postpartum Support

My postpartum care is about caring for the family as you find your feet in those tender, often unpredictable early days with a new baby. I want you to feel that someone is looking after you, not just the baby.

My support is practical, nurturing, and guided by what your family needs most. Some days that might mean holding the baby while you shower, eat a proper meal, or catch up on some much needed sleep. Other days, it might mean helping with light household tasks, supporting feeding, or simply sitting with you while you talk through how you’re feeling.

We can spend time learning your baby’s cues, exploring newborn care, and building your confidence as you get to know one another. I offer non-judgmental, evidence-informed support with feeding, settling, and the adjustment to life with a newborn, while respecting your choices and the way you want to parent.

I also make space for the emotional side of postpartum. The transition into parenthood can bring joy, exhaustion, vulnerability, and unexpected feelings sometimes all in the same afternoon.

My approach is gentle, intuitive, and practical. I meet you where you are, without a rigid agenda or expectations about what your home or your recovery should look like. I want you to feel comfortable asking for help, resting without guilt, and finding your own rhythm as a family.

Testimonials

“Jodie’s presence during my deliery brought such a sense of calm and reassurance. She was kind, accomodating, genuine and incredibly supportive. One thing I will always remember is how Jodie constantly reminded me to come back to my breathing when I would get completely “zoned out” from the intensity of my contractions. In those moments when the pain felt overwhelming and I found myself losing focus her gentle reminders helped ground me and bring me back to myself. She knew exactly when to step and what I needed without ever making me feel pressured. Jodie is incredibly knowledgeable but what makes her truly special is the serene and calm presence she brings into the room. Even during the turbulence and intensity of delivery, she remained steady, reassuring and composed. Her calm energy was something I could lean on when everything around me felt overwhelming.

I absolutely recommend Jodie to any family looking for a doula who brings not only knowledge and experience but also warmth, calm and genuine heart to her care of not just mom and baby but to the entire family”

– Chitra R.

“I am so grateful that Jodie was part of my journey from the beginning of my pregnancy to the birth of my baby and beyond. She made me feel comfortable, supported and genuinely cared for every step of the way. Jodie has a calm presence and always seemed to know exactly what I needed, whether it was reassurance, guidance, someone to listen or simply a hand to hold. Having her by my side for my birth meant so much to me and her kindness and care are something I will always remember.

I couldn’t recommend Jodie enough. Thank you for everything, Jodie!”
