What is your personal definition of “doula”?
My personal definition of a doula is a person who comes alongside you with support and care. A doula is especially helpful when you are experiencing a major transition in life. As a postpartum doula I would aim to support a family as they welcome a new person into their world.
What brought you to birth and postpartum work?
Two years ago I began to feel the need to transition from my work as a full time artist into the world of women’s health. I recently moved to Vancouver from the US and while I was waiting for my immigration status to arrive I began to volunteer. In January 2026, I started volunteering with Vancouver Coastal Health in their Cuddle program. As a Cuddle volunteer you make one weekly visit to a postpartum mother and child. I have worked with three different families this year and have only had good experiences. My positive experience led me to exploring postpartum doula as my next step in care work. I feel passionate about supporting a birth parent in the tender early days of postpartum. In addition, I am currently applying to nursing schools to further my education in healthcare.
In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?
My medicine is a nice long walk, meditation, making something in clay, laughing with my family, calling my best friend, and buying myself flowers.
