What is your personal definition of “doula”?
To me, a Doula is a steady, compassionate presence. Someone who holds space without judgment, offers information without an agenda, and believes deeply in the birthing person’s body, intuition, and choices. A doula is there to support, not to lead, but to walk alongside during one of life’s most vulnerable and transformative moments.
What brought you to birth and postpartum work?
I came to birth and postpartum work through becoming a mother myself. I have always been in awe of the birth world, but when it was my turn, birth truly took me for a ride. Pregnancy was hard, yet I was continually amazed by my body and the immense mental and emotional strength it takes to grow and bring forth life.
I have experienced one hospital birth and two home births, and each one changed me forever. Through them, I came to understand—deep in my bones—just how incredible our bodies are and how powerful it is to be supported, respected, and believed in during such a vulnerable time.
What called me most was not only birth itself, but the sacred space surrounding it—the before and the after. The quiet moments, the rawness, the deep connection that can be built when someone is truly held during one of the most tender transitions of their life. Being invited into that space is an honour, and it is something I do not take lightly.
That is why I do this work. Because presence matters. Because connection matters. Because birth changes us—and no one should walk through it alone.
In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?
The forest is the first place I go! Hot bath, I love a good dog walk with a podcast, music, singing and I also love a good cuddle from my own littles.

Tell us more about the ethos in your birth doula practice:
I approach each birth/postpartum with humility, curiosity, and respect, recognizing that no two experiences are the same. At the heart of my work is connection— listening deeply, being fully present, and building trust so families feel supported, seen, and never alone.
I believe birth is not something to be managed, but something to be held. My role is to protect the emotional space of birth/postpartum by offering calm reassurance, grounded presence, and clear, compassionate support through each experience. I honour each person’s choices, values, and lived experience, and strive to create a space where people feel safe, respected and supported as they move through this powerful transition!

We received care from Taylor throughout the first month of postpartum. She was super helpful, knowledgeable, patient, and caring, supporting us through the toughest times. Lizzy was also excellent in coordinating all the schedule changes to help us get the support when we needed it the most. I highly recommend Brood for postpartum care to any parents! — Allen C
