What is your personal definition of “doula”?
My definition of a doula is someone who can provide mothers with professional knowledge and support; someone who is willing to give of themselves sacrificially, blessing the people around them. I believe a doula is called to care for their client in holistic and intuitive ways, gently caring for the birthing parent and their family.
What brought you to birth and postpartum work?
I have always been drawn to caring for families, as I grew up in a traditional Mennonite culture surrounded by lots of babies, children and families. I was part of several rural communities in Mississippi (in the U.S.) and then later Alberta where hard work, holistic living and natural food were a huge part of our culture.
After moving to Vancouver to attend art school, I began working at Union Gospel Mission in the DTES, specifically working with new parents. I learned so many valuable lessons during this time and developed an expanded passion for holistic care. I discovered that the season after becoming a mother is so intimate, special, wild and crazy, and I wanted to spend my time cultivating this space for parents.
In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?
I like to say that I am in tune with how much I can handle emotionally and physically, as I have learned when I need to be restored and resedt. I love to rejuvenate with good food, a cold swim or a hangout with friends. Sometimes I need a good verbal process with someone I trust, like a spiritual mentor or friend.

Tell us more about the ethos in your birth doula practice:
My main goal is to make sure you are heard, supported, loved, respected and empowered through your birth. I do not have a specific approach to my doula care, as am very flexible with what you and your family need. However, my heritage is rooted in care that is holistic, intuitive and old-fashioned: providing nutritional food, loving and hands-on care, cleaning, good conversation and safe presence. I practice and encourage instinctual and intuitive education and knowledge, encouraging you to trust what is inside of you and the instincts you have as a parent!

Testimonials
We reached out to Brood to coordinate last-minute postpartum support after some exceptional circumstances in our son’s delivery. From the moment we contacted this team, we were met with unbelievable kindness and support – truly, we felt like we were immediately given a village when we had none. We aren’t sure how to put into words how grateful we are for the care we’ve received from our doulas. Unbelievable at their job, they are warm, responsive, knowledgeable, and immediately made us and our baby feel so cared for and comfortable. They’ve truly been an integral part of our transition to parenthood, and we aren’t sure how we would’ve done this without her. Thank you to this team for all that you do. We will forever remember you as part of this precious time of our lives. To other families considering doula care, you truly cannot go wrong with this lovely group of people. — Nica L
We received care from Lindsey throughout the first month of postpartum. She was super helpful, knowledgeable, patient, and caring, supporting us through the toughest times. Lizzy was also excellent in coordinating all the schedule changes to help us get the support when we needed it the most. I highly recommend Brood for postpartum care to any parents! — Allen C
I just want to start by saying Brood is hands down the most caring, knowledgeable, responsive, and trusting care agency that we have ever encountered. Lindsey, in particular, brought such warmth, expertise, and presence to our experience. The personalized service she gave us—from in-person birth support to postpartum doula care—made every day of this process an absolute joy. Her knowledge and attention to every detail ensured our newborn was healthy, happy, and set up for the critical first few months of her life. We cannot say enough good things about the Brood staff. There is nothing more important than making sure a child is brought into this world safely and receives the best care for the gentle beginning of their life. We absolutely love the Brood family and are so very thankful that we found them and had the joyful experience they brought to this already joyful part of our lives. They enter your life seamlessly and curate each experience with your goals and wellbeing at the top of their list. Thank you, Brood—and thank you Lindsey—for everything. You simply are the best. We take a bow to you — From everyone: Presthaya, Conrad, Baby Freya (& Mary).
We had a really great experience with Brood. All of the doulas are so lovely, friendly, caring and helpful, and Brood was so accommodating of our scheduling needs, especially if we needed shifts switched or added. Our main doula Lindsey, was amazing, she took charge of us in those first few weeks when everything was a blur, and this was exactly what we needed as first-time parents. We had a mix of nighttime and daytime care, and initially, the night shifts were essential. Having our doula there allowed my partner to get a full night’s rest, I was well supported overnight, and our baby was carefully watched and cared for. Eventually, as he started sleeping through the night, we changed to day shifts so we could get errands done or attend appointments or just have a nap! We’re very grateful to have been able to have the help. Thank you! — Alaina O
I wanted to thank you again for the help in the last couple of months. It’s been invaluable in helping Li get through her health issues and been wonderful to know Tai is so well looked after at night! — Chris & Li
