What is your personal definition of “doula”?
The Village. Ready to meet you wherever you are in your fertility journey.
What brought you to birth and postpartum work?
I have always loved being in service. Caring for others, especially in their time of need, has felt somewhat hardwired into my head, heart, and DNA. But truthfully, my journey to birth work was perhaps a bit backwards. In fact, following the time spent with my Grandad on his end-of-life journey, my sister said to me, “Hey, have you ever considered being a doula?” And just like that, out of death, my doula adventures were born.
In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?
Music, movement, meditation, dessert and a pint…of ice cream.
What is a standout book, movie/tv, etc about the childbearing/parenting journey that you return to?

Tell us more about the ethos in your birth doula practice:
The ethos of my doula work is grounded entirely in the spirit of the Village. I do not doubt that this comes from my core values of community, collaboration, and love. Humans are not meant to birth in isolation. Historically, at least up until the institutionalization of medicine, birth has always taken place in the presence of one’s trusted community. Ultimately, allowing birthing people to experience comfort through the presence and wisdom of their loved ones. In other parts of the world, these practices do still exist. But today in North America, it’s hard to tap into the ancestral wisdom of birthing that we all carry, especially when we birth without support. So, as a guest in all birthing spaces offering my support, I strive to manifest that spirit of the Village.
Prenatal Care
- Free In-Person Foundations Visit → Once your contract is signed and your first-choice doula has been confirmed, your doula will visit your home for around 1+ hour so you can chat, connect, and ensure the fit feels right—for both of you!
- Personalized Prenatal Sessions → Enjoy 2-3 in-person or virtual prenatal sessions. During each meeting, we will explore the physiological aspects of birth, discuss your birth preferences, practice different comfort measures, and build a practical, personalized birthing plan. Support partners are encouraged to attend each prenatal session when available so that everyone feels ready for the birthing experience ahead.
- Phone, Text and Email support → I am available via phone, email and text from the moment you hire me up until your birth. I will be on-call to you 24/7 from 36 weeks of gestation until birth.
- Personalized Resources & Referrals → As you navigate your pregnancy, I will provide you with all of the desired evidence-based resources and trusted local referrals.

Birth Attendance
- Continuous In-Person Care → When it’s time, and my presence has been requested, I’ll be by your side for the duration of your labour to provide support and comfort for both the birthing person and partner. I will stay with you for up to 2 hours immediately post birth to provide any additional support that is needed.
- Comfort & Pain Management Techniques → Together we’ll use the relaxation, rhythms and rituals you desire for your birth experience. This includes guided meditation, breath work, massage, acupressure, water therapy, counterpressure, music, movement, dancing, and more. With access to my doula bag, you’ll also get access to any of my comfort tools and a TENS machine.
- Preference Advocacy → My goal is to ensure you feel safe, seen, heard and empowered throughout your birth experience. I do this by creating space for you to have discussions, ask questions, and advocate for your birthing preferences.
- Newborn Care Assistance → Immediately post birth, I’ll support and provide you with tools so you feel confident navigating feeding, diapering, sleeping, swaddling and more.
- Birth Photography → Capture the moment with photos and videos and cherish the memories for a lifetime.
Postpartum Support
- Detailed Debrief → Together we’ll debrief your birth experience. I’ll fill in any gaps in your memory and answer any questions you might have about the experience.
- 1-2 Postpartum Care Sessions → During these sessions, we’ll review various topics including newborn care, infant feeding, recovery, infant sleep, baby wearing, sex and relationships, household management and more.
- Household Management → If it’s required, I can support with light housework, meal/snack preparations, and basic sibling and/or pet care.
- Ongoing Communication → As you navigate the transition from birth to life at home, I’ll be available to you via phone, email and text for 6 weeks postpartum.
- Personalized Resources & Referrals → I will provide you with all of the desired evidence-based resources, feeding/sleeping/changing trackers, and trusted local referrals.
- Gratitude Gift → Following each birth, I debrief my experience through art. At the end of our time together, I would like to set this painting free and gift it to my client.

Testimonials
Alanah was my saving grace before, during and after pregnancy. I don’t think I would have been able to get through it without her. Her knowledge, support and kindness helped me every single day. I suffer from severe anxiety, and her preparation and understanding changed my experience to be completely positive, even during difficult days. I would recommend her to any family and think the doula support is so important! I can’t say enough how amazing she was!!! My family was beyond lucky to have her during this time! — Natasha L
