What is your personal definition of “doula”?

A doula is there to support, advocate, and empower a family as they embrace this massive transition in life. Honoring each family’s unique values, hopes, and possibilities in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We show up wholeheartedly and respectfully for a family in all the ways they choose to walk this path.

What brought you to birth and postpartum work?

When I was pregnant with my first baby I trained as a prenatal yoga teacher. This opened up a world of information into so many aspects of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum that fueled my deepening into learning and unlearning what to expect. This led to completing a full-spectrum doula training later that year with a focus on supporting the emotional and physical needs of those going through pregnancy, birth, grief, and loss. I’ve continued to learn and unlearn more and more through trainings, experience with friends, my own babies, and supporting families along the way, finding myself continuously pulled towards this work time and time again.

In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?

I prioritize making the small and simple things that support my mental and physical health part of my self-care routine. That may look like a hot bath, walking barefoot in the forest, savoring a hot cup of tea (finally!), or a yoga class. With two little ones on the go, I know the importance of prioritizing myself daily and how to navigate those moments when life is busy happening.

What is a standout book, movie/tv, etc about the childbearing/parenting journey that you return to?

Testimonials

I couldn’t have asked for a better Doula than Heather. She has a presence about her that is non-imposing or overwhelming (which is great for when you’re in active labor!), but just gentle and calming. Heather helped immensely alongside my partner during labor and also my birth, tending to my every need and double-checking everything with me that the Midwives/Doctors/nurses were doing. Because we had laid out a birth plan together ahead of time, she knew what I wanted and didn’t want and was able to relay that information to whomever it was necessary in moments when I wasn’t able to speak for myself. Heather physically helped me so much with her hip compressions as I was riding the waves of my contractions, and was also a vital person in supporting me during the pushing stage. After my baby was born, Heather took care of so many things for me, like having my placenta put on ice and getting it to the right person for encapsulation and checking in on me after the birth, and bringing me nutritious snacks and meals. She made me feel very looked after. I can’t say enough good things about Heather, and I know that when my next baby comes, I will be having her by my side once more! Thank you so much, Heather! — Marina

Heather was absolutely wonderful to work with throughout our pregnancy. As our doula, Heather took the time to understand our unique situation and needs. She was very patient and answered many questions regarding the entire birth process. Leading up to our delivery date, Heather made us aware of the many available resources and tools. In particular, Heather was exceptionally helpful in guiding us through alternative options and questions to ask our family doctor and OBGYN. We never felt alone throughout the process. Heather always checked in to see how we were both doing as we approached delivery day. On the day of delivery, Heather communicated regularly with us in the middle of the night and even arrived early to provide as much support as possible. Like a great coach, Heather supported us in the delivery room as well as comforting and reassuring everyone. She also helped to communicate with the hospital team and stayed until the very end. Heather went the extra mile even after the delivery of our baby. She periodically checked in with us to see how we are all doing. Suggested many great resources along the way to tackle any difficulties that we were facing. She even visited us in person afterward to check in! We highly recommend Heather. — Judy and Frank
