What is your personal definition of “doula”?

A doula is there to support, advocate, and empower a family as they embrace this massive transition in life. Honoring each family’s unique values, hopes, and possibilities in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We show up wholeheartedly and respectfully for a family in all the ways they choose to walk this path.

What brought you to birth and postpartum work?

When I was pregnant with my first baby I trained as a prenatal yoga teacher. This opened up a world of information into so many aspects of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum that fueled my deepening into learning and unlearning what to expect. This led to completing a full-spectrum doula training later that year with a focus on supporting the emotional and physical needs of those going through pregnancy, birth, grief, and loss. I’ve continued to learn and unlearn more and more through trainings, experience with friends, my own babies, and supporting families along the way, finding myself continuously pulled towards this work time and time again.

In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?

I prioritize making the small and simple things that support my mental and physical health part of my self-care routine. That may look like a hot bath, walking barefoot in the forest, savoring a hot cup of tea (finally!), or a yoga class. With two little ones on the go, I know the importance of prioritizing myself daily and how to navigate those moments when life is busy happening.

What is a standout book, movie/tv, etc about the childbearing/parenting journey that you return to?

I wasn’t even going to hire a doula. I thought about it when I became pregnant and just couldn’t see how hiring someone would make that big of a difference. It was highly recommended to me to find a doula by my midwife and several other sources so I thought I would just talk to a few doulas at least. Best. Decision. Ever. My very first meeting with Heather I felt so comfortable with her. Having her support for me and my husband while I gave birth was the best decision. She took care of us in such a kind, warm and comforting way. It was never disruptive. She was so helpful and caring. She understands when to give space, when to offer support, when silence is needed and when encouragement is needed. She spoke up for me during the birth to ensure that my wishes were being honored as we had discussed them in our meetings when I was pregnant. Before giving birth and after she was always available to answer questions and help me solve issues. This was especially helpful postpartum, as being a new parent, I was trying to figure out so many new things. If my husband and I are in Vancouver when I give birth to our second child, I will contact Heather again. She’s wonderful. — S.S

If you want a supportive, educational, and informative birthing experience I would highly recommend Heather as your doula. I had a rough vision of how I wanted my labour to go and Heather was a huge support for my partner and I. She came to our house later into my pregnancy and we talked at length about what I wanted, didn’t want and what I was on the fence about. Heather never judged my choices, but reinforced I was doing what was best for me and my baby. When it was go-time, Heather came to our apartment and laboured with me. She immediately made the energy in the room calm and in her bag of goodies she had a tens machine which was a game changer for my long labour! She made the hospital room cozy with music and lights. I never asked her to do anything rather she intuitively knew what was needed; counter pressure during contractions, getting my mom and partner food, and educating me when medical decisions came up.The delivery of my daughter is a little blurry in my memory (lack of sleep and so much adrenaline), so I’m incredibly grateful to have the photos Heather took of my daughter’s birth. She captured the love between my husband and I, and the raw moments right after my daughter was born.Postpartum as a first time Mom, Heather brough soothing tools and aids to help me heal and responded to all my questions with her own experience and informative links to source my own opinion. Finally, after a month of our baby being born, Heather did a family photoshoot with us. My birthing experience was amazing, and I have memorable photos to look back on. Our family is so happy we had Heather with us as a support and guide. — Taylor
We loved our experience with Brood! Aside from the (very good!) online course and material on birth prep, their help in finding us a doula (very fast, and a very good match) was AMAZING! On our initial phone call, Emma asked me an important question that I had never even thought about. “I understand that the logistics surrounding your birth are very complicated. But aside from that – what would you want for your birth to be like?” Emma, with that question you opened up a new path for us! Thank you. Emma then suggested three doulas to us who might be a good match, and the first one was the perfect fit for us. Thank you, Heather, for all how you supported us throughout our birth and in the time surrounding it! When I met you, I had sleepless nights about what I could do so that I had a birth partner and someone to look after our older child. I wanted our child around me but looked after and my partner was the only person aside from a midwife that I could imagine at our birth. And then I met you. Everything changed. In the weeks leading up to the birth, you answered all our questions, helped us plan the home birth like no one else did, and helped me to find my confidence and my calm. At the birth, you brought a play kitchen for our daughter (amazing!) and then you were there with me. It ended up being the way that you were mostly my birth partner while my partner looked after our daughter, which felt right at that moment. Hearing her giggles in the next room and having you with all your calm, strength, and knowledge by my side was perfect. You were there for me when the Midwives had not yet arrived. You were my main focus point even when they had. Whenever I felt that I could not do this, you squeezed my hands and looked into my eyes and said something along the lines of “And you don’t have to do it like this. I have many more ideas (of natural pain relief) that we can try. Let’s change it up”. That was the best thing for me to hear at that moment, and also – you did!! You had so many great ways to help me feel more comfortable and ideas on how I could help my baby move along. And when it was time for her to be born, you made sure my partner and sleeping daughter were right there with me. You gave us space to welcome her afterward and helped with the cleanup. Heather, when I think of my birth I see your strong calm eyes. Thank you for all that you were for us – a guiding hand, a birth partner, a friend. We will always hold you in our hearts. — Inana
I am incredibly thankful for the outstanding support provided by my postpartum doula, Heather, during the arrival of our newborn. Her expertise and compassionate care made a significant difference in navigating the challenges of early parenthood. She was such a great support, offering invaluable guidance and reassurance for us. I highly recommend her services to any new parent seeking a knowledgeable and caring postpartum doula. Thank you Heather! — Via

I couldn’t have asked for a better Doula than Heather. She has a presence about her that is non-imposing or overwhelming (which is great for when you’re in active labor!), but just gentle and calming. Heather helped immensely alongside my partner during labor and also my birth, tending to my every need and double-checking everything with me that the Midwives/Doctors/nurses were doing. Because we had laid out a birth plan together ahead of time, she knew what I wanted and didn’t want and was able to relay that information to whomever it was necessary in moments when I wasn’t able to speak for myself. Heather physically helped me so much with her hip compressions as I was riding the waves of my contractions, and was also a vital person in supporting me during the pushing stage. After my baby was born, Heather took care of so many things for me, like having my placenta put on ice and getting it to the right person for encapsulation and checking in on me after the birth, and bringing me nutritious snacks and meals. She made me feel very looked after. I can’t say enough good things about Heather, and I know that when my next baby comes, I will be having her by my side once more! Thank you so much, Heather! — Marina

Heather was absolutely wonderful to work with throughout our pregnancy. As our doula, Heather took the time to understand our unique situation and needs. She was very patient and answered many questions regarding the entire birth process. Leading up to our delivery date, Heather made us aware of the many available resources and tools. In particular, Heather was exceptionally helpful in guiding us through alternative options and questions to ask our family doctor and OBGYN. We never felt alone throughout the process. Heather always checked in to see how we were both doing as we approached delivery day. On the day of delivery, Heather communicated regularly with us in the middle of the night and even arrived early to provide as much support as possible. Like a great coach, Heather supported us in the delivery room as well as comforting and reassuring everyone. She also helped to communicate with the hospital team and stayed until the very end. Heather went the extra mile even after the delivery of our baby. She periodically checked in with us to see how we are all doing. Suggested many great resources along the way to tackle any difficulties that we were facing. She even visited us in person afterward to check in! We highly recommend Heather. — Judy and Frank
