What is your personal definition of “doula”?

A doula is kind of like a knowledgeable best friend—someone who will support you and stand by your side no matter what circumstances arise. Someone you can laugh with, cry with, and sometimes even do both at the same time. Beyond providing evidence-based information and practical support, a doula offers a steady, reassuring presence throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum journey, helping you feel heard, empowered, and cared for every step of the way.

What brought you to birth and postpartum work?

I have always known that I wanted to pursue a career centred on caring for and supporting others. Growing up, I watched my mother work as a physician, providing low-risk deliveries and later establishing a lactation clinic, which gave me a firsthand appreciation for the impact of birth work. Through these experiences, I developed a deep passion for supporting families during the transition to parenthood. While I knew that performing medical procedures was not the right path for me, I was drawn to the opportunity to provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. This ultimately led me to become a doula.

In a climate of caregiver burnout, how are you caring for yourself?

I take care of myself through debriefing, taking baths after long births, and expressing myself through art. I love to paint, do henna, crochet, sew– any craft, you name it!

What is a standout book, movie/tv, etc about the childbearing/parenting journey that you return to?

Tell us more about the ethos in your birth doula practice:

I approach birth work with deep empathy, compassion, and a strong foundation in psychology. I believe that one of the most important aspects of being a doula is building a genuine connection with each client. My goal is to create a relationship built on trust, understanding, and mutual respect, so that when the time comes to reach out for support, it feels less like calling a coach and more like calling a trusted sister or friend. I strive to provide not only evidence-based information and practical guidance but also unwavering emotional support, ensuring that every family feels seen, heard, and cared for throughout their journey into parenthood.

Do you have a preferred location where you typically support births?

I do not have a preferred environment!

Prenatal Care
  • Free In-Person Foundations Visit → Once your contract is signed and your first-choice doula has been confirmed, your doula will visit your home for around 1+ hour so you can chat, connect, and ensure the fit feels right—for both of you!
  • Unlimited call/text Support & Continuous Support Throughout Labour & Delivery
  • Free resources & handouts catered to your needs → Throughout our prenatal visits and ongoing communication, I may also provide personalized, evidence-based handouts tailored to your specific needs and topics of interest.
  • Two (in-person) 90-minute Prenatal Visits → During the first prenatal visit, we will explore your birth preferences, any current pregnancy discomforts, your pregnancy history, and any fears or concerns you may have related to labour, delivery, and the postpartum period. We will also discuss birth interventions and coping strategies for labour. In the second prenatal visit, we will revisit your birth preferences and reflect on coping strategies—what has been helpful, what has not worked as well, and what adjustments may be needed. We will also begin preparing for the postpartum period, which may include discussions around newborn care, what to expect in the first two weeks of life, breastfeeding, and other early postpartum considerations.
  • Brood’s Family Membership → You will gain access to five online courses, our virtual private clubhouse, and the members’ area for ongoing education and support.
  • Postpartum Product Guide → A curated list of our top postpartum must-haves, based on what we see support families again and again.
Birth Attendance
  • Continuous Support Throughout Labour and Delivery → When a client enters early labour, they are encouraged to contact me to keep me informed. Once they transition into active labour and are admitted to the hospital, I will join them and remain present with continuous support until the birth of their baby. If a client is finding it difficult to cope before hospital admission, I may also provide support in the home setting and offer comfort measures and coping strategies.
  • Capacity Building For Myself → During labour, I take short breaks as needed to eat, use the washroom, or rest briefly, ensuring that my client is never left without support during these times and that another support person is present before I step away.
  • Emotional Support → My labour support includes emotional reassurance, affirmations, and continuous encouragement, as well as practical comfort measures such as guided breathing techniques, counter-pressure, massage, and assistance with positioning. I also support clients physically through movement and positioning changes, provide information to help them understand procedures and options, advocate for their birth preferences, and suggest evidence-based techniques that may help support labour progression or encourage optimal fetal positioning.
Postpartum Support
  • Typical postpartum visit support includes emotional support, newborn care guidance, feeding support, postpartum recovery education, and light practical assistance related to adjusting to life with a new baby → During postpartum visits following your birth, I will check in on how you and your baby are doing, discuss your birth experience, answer questions, and provide individualized support based on your family’s current needs.
  • Newborn care guidance and support → This may include education and hands-on guidance with feeding, diapering, bathing, soothing techniques, safe sleep practices, infant cues, and general newborn care. I can also help troubleshoot common early parenting concerns and provide evidence-based information to support your confidence as you adjust to caring for your baby.
  • Feeding support and guidance → Support may include assistance with positioning and latch, general assessment of feeding effectiveness, flange sizing support, bottle-feeding guidance, and suggestions for common concerns such as discomfort, engorgement, or low milk supply. If concerns fall outside my scope of practice, I will refer you to a lactation consultant or healthcare provider for further assessment and care.
  • Postpartum recovery education and emotional support → I provide a supportive space to process your birth experience, discuss your emotional well-being, and explore practical coping strategies for the transition into parenthood. I can also provide education on normal postpartum recovery and help identify when additional support from a healthcare provider may be beneficial.
  • Light practical assistance and resource support → During postpartum visits, I may assist with simple baby-related tasks, help organize feeding or recovery supplies, and connect families with relevant community resources or referrals when appropriate. The primary focus of these visits is education, guidance, and support for you and your baby as you adjust to the postpartum period.

Testimonials

I was nervous about feeling comfortable during such a vulnerable time, but she made me feel completely safe, supported, and at ease from the start. She cared not only for my baby (who absolutely adores her!) but for me emotionally and physically as well. She also supported my husband through the process, which meant so much to us as first-time parents. Megan made postpartum feel a lot less overwhelming, and I already know I’ll be asking her to support me again for my next baby. I truly cannot recommend her enough. — Alia M
