We asked our Victoria doulas → what brought you to birth and postpartum work?
Alice Brandl (they/them) is a birth and postpartum doula.
I have mostly in the past worked in office environments and customer service-oriented jobs. Towards the end of 2020, I was feeling more drawn to doing something that was more oriented around creating and working with community. I felt drawn to birth and postpartum work in particular because of the lack of support available for parents and their children.

I saw in my life the importance of community and listening to our bodies. Through my interests in early childhood development, working with people, and building community care I came into postpartum doula work.
Jasmine Robertson (she/her) is a postpartum doula.
I found my way to this work through other care work, primarily with young children. My work with children and families absolutely informs how I show up as a doula. I’ve been drawn to birth and babies from a very young age until finally a season of discernment made me realize it was time to pursue my secret wish of being a doula! I love postpartum work because I love tending to people in their homes and witnessing them build trust in themselves and their babies. I love birth work because I am continually bowled over by the immense strength and surrender of birthing people (and their partners/support teams).
Camille Stubel (she/her) is a birth and postpartum doula.
The births of my two children ignited a curiosity in me for the birth world. I felt that I couldn’t have done what I did in labor without the support of my doula. When my kids entered kindergarten I started to specialize in teaching pre and postnatal yoga, I thought about doula training but none of the programs seemed to be the right fit for me. It wasn’t until years later that I saw that my doula was offering a 6-month mentorship program, I jumped at the chance to train in such an intimate setting. I found the process of becoming a doula so rewarding and I continue to be amazed at the epic journey that occurs from pregnancy into parenthood. I have been deeply humbled by being a parent and am always grateful for the challenges and lessons that have been presented to me. Reflecting on my own parenting led me to become a certified parent coach through Connected Parenting. The postpartum journey never ends!

Family experiences. In my formative years, one of my older sisters became a young single parent, and I helped her through her pregnancy, postpartum, and then parenting journeys. Then as an adult, another sibling invited me to be a part of her birth. There was a marvelous doula there, and I realized this was something people could actually do!
